  8. Announcing the CORNELL GATEDaemon CONSORTIUM
  9.  
  10. The Cornell Gatedaemon Project produces "gated" (pronounced gate-dee),
  11. a modular software program which supports multiple network routing
  12. protocols and protocol families. Gated is used by hundreds of
  13. individuals and organizations around the world. It is used by
  14. researchers, implementors, and industry as:
  15.  
  16.     %   a platform for new network routing protocol prototyping and
  17.     deployment
  18.  
  19.     %    a source of routing protocol reference implementations to test
  20.     against
  21.  
  22.     %    a distribution mechanism of new protocol implementations
  23.  
  24.     %    a bootstrapping facility providing the core for the
  25.     development of commercial products
  26.  
  27.     %    a means of access to leading edge network research and
  28.     development
  29.  
  30. The GATEDaemon Consortium presents a formal structure to support and
  31. expand the current successful collaborations already in place to
  32. develop gated functionality.  The consortium will:
  33.  
  34.     %    allow functionality needed by the community to be delivered on
  35.     a more timely basis
  36.  
  37.     %    build a broader funding base for a predictable future
  38.  
  39.     %    streamline licensing procedures
  40.  
  41.     %    improve technology transfer between academic and industry
  42.  
  43.     %    influence and educate the vendor community
  44.  
  45.     %    develop a structure to train new people in the technology
  46.  
  47. Membership is open to all organizations interested in supporting and
  48. participating in development of internetwork routing protocols.
  49. Membership is not a prerequisite for licensing of gated source code.
  50.  
  51. Membership benefits will include at least:

  53.     %    active discussions of development features and goal setting 
  54.  
  55.     %    in-depth technical seminars on new gated features and capabilities
  56.  
  57.     %    assurance of the continued availability and development of an
  58.     important resource
  59.  
  60.     %    internships, where an organization can send an employee to
  61.     work and learn about routing software with gated development
  62.     staff
  63.  
  64.     %    sabbatical/contract funding, whereby an organization with an
  65.     employee who is making contributions to gated can receive
  66.     Consortium funding for that work.
